Soft daylight entering calm interior workspace

Frequently Asked Questions

These are the questions people most often bring before their first session. If something isn't covered here, you're welcome to ask directly.

Is online therapy actually effective?

Yes. For the concerns most people bring to this kind of work — anxiety, depression, identity questions, relationship difficulties — online sessions produce outcomes comparable to in-person work. The most important factor in therapeutic outcomes is the quality of the relationship, and that develops just as naturally online.

For expats specifically, online therapy removes frictions like navigating a new city, or searching for an English-speaking therapist locally, and the consistency of weekly sessions is easier to maintain from your own environment.

What happens in the first session?

It's a conversation, not an assessment. We talk about what's brought you here and whatever feels most present. You're welcome to share as much or as little as feels right. At the end you decide whether you'd like to continue. There's no expectation that you will.

What if I don't know what to say?

This is one of the most common concerns before a first session, and it rarely turns out to be the obstacle it felt like. Many people begin with something like: "I'm not sure exactly why I'm here, but something hasn't felt right for a while." That's a completely reasonable place to start and often more honest than a polished explanation.

If you struggle to find words, don’t worry. Not only can we slow down, but those sessions that start with “I don’t really know what to say today” often end up bringing forward something unexpectedly important. Also - silence is allowed. There's no correct way to do this.

Do you work specifically with expats?

Yes. Expat experience is a central focus of my practice, not simply a demographic I'm open to working with. There's a meaningful difference between a practitioner who happens to work in English and one who understands what relocation actually does — the identity questions, the particular loneliness, the exhaustion of constant cultural adaptation.

I work primarily with English-speaking clients in the Netherlands and across Europe, and in Slovene with Slovene-speaking clients.

How private are online sessions?

Everything discussed is confidential, handled in accordance with GDPR and professional ethical standards. Sessions are encrypted and never recorded. Nothing is disclosed without your explicit consent, except where required by law.

If privacy at home is a concern (a shared space, thin walls) we can talk through options before we begin. Headphones, a parked car, a quiet space outside your usual environment: none of these are unusual arrangements.

Do you accept health insurance?

Sessions are private-pay and are not reimbursed by Dutch health insurance providers. The first session is offered at a 50% discount, with no obligation to continue afterward.

A single session at half price, no obligation to continue. If you've been thinking about therapy for a while without quite getting there, the reduced first session is designed to make that step a little easier.
